I know the title sounds verbose, but the idea is quite silly ...

In The Smoking Jacket episode of "Curb your Enthusiasm", Larry David (Creator of the sitcom  "Seinfeld") annoys his wife by throwing out a magazine in which she had written an important phone  number. Meanwhile, his friend Jeff comes along and invites him to The Playboy Mansion for a party. Larry  is all confused what to do now that his wife is already mad at him and it would drive her wild if she finds out he went to party with Playboy models. But, Jeff tries to convince him that he is already in trouble and the situation can't get any worse, so he might as well come along ...

Jeff: So, are you going to go to the Playboy mansion?
Larry:  I can't go … I am so deep in the doghouse now … She is really pissed off at me as I threw away  her magazine that had a phone number on it …
Jeff: Aww, come on, man. You are already in the doghouse. You can't get into any more trouble. You  might as well get your money's worth.
Larry: yeah .. I might as well do something else wrong …
Jeff: It's the double transgression theory

So, that's the immaculate double-transgression theory !!! If you are already in trouble, just go have more fun because one apology would work for both of them - Always remember : They can't kill you twice.

It is particularly interesting to see an extended version of this theory at work in the context of Indian political theater these days. Last week, another  spectrum scam surfaced, this time connected with the ISRO. And I began to understand the wicked  genius behind the attitude of UPA these days - The UPA is using the multiple-transgression theory !!! They know they are cornered and they are just thinking  "what's the worst that can happen now? Seriously, what more can they do to us? So, let's have more fun  and take care of our next 10 generations …" After the CWG … the Adarsh Colony ScamInflation of  food prices 2G spectrum scamRahul Gandhi as a (young) politician … would it really matter … if  the ISRO blew up a satellite launch and the negotiation on the spectrum? The people have long given  up … the media is busy solving murder cases … the UPA gave up long ago right after they realized even  AR Rahman couldn't save their faces from the CWG fiasco (Poor Bastards, they really thought a song  would bail 'em out … heh?) …Only the right-wing bloggers and simple-minded folks after two drinks down are refusing to give up those naive gesticulations of sarcastic shocks and detached disappointments every time they hear a new scam break out.

Let's get practical here. If you are the UPA, what are your realistic options? Imagine the kind of futile effort required to prove that you are actually innocent and are just a victim of some genuine miscommunication. Get real, for godssakes. Things are kind of irreparable, the public distrust is increasing - also, the public sucks anyway. You are not going to be around forever and the best part is that you will face the heat a maximum of one time. So, we got nothing to lose anymore - LET THE 'PARTY' GO WILD. The only rule now is "NO RULES".

Not just that, having multiple controversies/scams has the added advantage of confusing the opposition  (something like the concept of "Confusopoly" by Scott Adams of Dilbert fame). By creating more scams, they  have managed to created more work for the opposition who spends enormous amount of energy attempting to  'understand' the situation rather than thinking of a political strategy or solutions. It's like the double whammy - They can continue doing what they want, now that the opposition now suffers from choice overload of issues to attack. I bet you can never focus on any topic in a single day of discussion and it is too easy to distract the opposition:

Don't forget the discussion on the evening news :

Don't think I painted BJP as dumb or anything. First of all, having so many contentious issues at the same time is impossible to be handled by a single political-party brain. UPA has figured out a way to pull this one off. All it has to do is to hang around till 2014, create some whistle-blowers every three months and continue to govern with the same seriousness as a 4th year college student. Plus, it is always easy to throw the BJP off by letting Rahul Gandhi say something irritating about Hinduism or not let the flag be hoisted - and hope that some RSS Sena goon will always fall for the decoy getting all morally worked up. Soon, the whole conversation shifts from scams/corruption to something trivial and economically useless like religious sentiments.

EPILOGUE:
I am not predicting some BJP victory or crap like that. I am just saying BJP will have a hard time trying to create a national discourse by making arguments on any specific issue when you got so many of them. Once more, the public will not listen to any serious and constructive solutions. Instead, the BJP will have to get ready for a whole bunch of speeches on science-fiction topics like "Eliminate Poverty", "Destroy corruption", "Attack Terrorism" and "Reservations for all people with tattoo of an Indian Flag". Meanwhile, the public will also witness UPA and it's PR department a.k.a. the mainstream media trying to remind the public (which SUCKS big time !!!) that the most important issue in our lives is our religion, caste and how they are all socially equal (Well, if they are really equal, why bother to discuss it ?).

What do you think?
