So, Aamir Khan's Faana is a big hit. Quite a happy ending though. But, it pays to give a thought for what the hell he's been sticking his head out...
One can easily see that BJP is not pleased with his entire "poking nose with national development" thing.(Who is he? Some neo - Pinochhio or what?) But the insecurity BJP manifested is ununderstandable. I don't know, but everybody takes things personally. Aamir Khan lashed out against the malfunctioning government and its policies. But, how does it retailiate? By banning the movie. Goddammit. As if banning "Fanaa" would be the perfect way to cork this meddler. We always want to override over the crisis. And probably pray that it soon ends. And wait till its forgotten and buried. And Crisis management 101 teaches to denounce the whistle blower. Yet again, the tribal is forgotten. The sting here is that he's really not in the picture.
An interesting reaction is that of the Congress. Their interpretation of the whole thing is that BJP is lambasting Aamir's religion, bringing out the hindutva politics. Aren't politics dirrty or what? Probably Dirrtier than Christina Aguilera (On a totally separate subject, I have no idea if she is).
The fundamental flaw in the management tactics is that when we are dealing with others its always general but when its us, its personal. Always Personal.
The fatal ecological destructive capabilities of building a dam had always been elaborately debated for a lot of years. You disturb the localites, the flora and fauna are grounded and banished... We can't even capably guess what such a step could do to the climate of the earth. All this is to generate, no doubt an important form of energy without which life is nearly imaginable. All this electricity would go down to cities. The villagers are displaced, probably packed to urbane places... and they get nothing. Not even 50% of villages in india would get enough electricity...
Anyway, the point is not to debate building of the dam, it has been commissioned. As long as human race comes up with some ingenious way of producing cheap energy, we have to compromise to stuff like this...But the next step is to ensure some justice to all affected. Land is being acquired of them at dirt cheap prices. Now they would be shoved into some hole to eke through the rest of their lives. That pinches. You can't just expect anybody used to a certain kind of cultural pace to make a rapid shift to lead a life in that urban wilderness. Not without proper assistnace. Its worse than future shock...
Arundhati Roy writes an incisive piece in defence of all those protesters and the NBA...
The DAM thing...
Vicariously imagining the plight of such a tribal can pretty much sickening... Thrust into naked reality clueless of the future, bereft of his past, perfect innocence regarding the present...
"You have to move or drown... They say they are going to clear out our whole area ...All of us are going to move... Some huge wall is going to come up... plunge us... We don't understand their reasons... We are being explained that its for our common good...You can't even argue with them... They say its a good deal. However, they are offering us money, in return. Yeah, Ofcourse, Money can buy anything...they say its good for our own brothers... But all the brothers we know are being stripped to their last of their possessions...They say they'll promise us a home for all of us... more over they have paid more than what the land is worth and any sensible fellow should live happily ever after... There's really nothing to worry..."
Common Good. Heh? Little do they probably realise that life would just start now. They are being pulled into the black hole of destiny. Inescapable. They would reach some urban place... Urban places as such have space constraints... How can any town adapt itself to this wave of sudden migration. They'll be given some miserable place to stay, some place where all households are assumed to be have lived alike and will cherish doing so... All houses would equal in dimensions, the whole colony would probably be designed employing some extensive space-cost optimisation techniques by a self styled architect appointed by the rehab committee...Not to forget the fact that the construction of the whole colony would be a well-publicised philantrophic deed from a local luminary. No Joint Families anymore. Things turn out to be pretty costly too... The money would soon vanish. Yes, exactly as assumed they would live alike, they would live in empty poverty, they are a part of that reeking slum... They would all have the same expression on their wornout faces - stung by an unfanthomable foe. Its all for the common good. They were told they would be taken care of. They were given money, a space to live. What can more can anyone do?
They would soon drown into the viscous whirlpool of unending need. They would be the usual city people. They would watch City guys run, fight, clinch, cheat, compete for virtually everything. They pay the cost of being civilized - something a tribal could never comprehend. Drowning in Water would have been far better.
Honestly, I have no solutions to these predicaments...
...
So, this silent little known valley has become a pot boiling issue. Debates would soon end. Tenders would flow in. Heavy clanging machines would dig out the whole place. The rugged mountains, the mighty green slopes would be cut down and carved in to straight lines and parabolas. The aves would have migrated. No bird would probably come back to quench its thirst. The fauna will have disappeared too. No one is screaming for them anyway. Everyone would say what's the environmental clearance for? The turbines would soon rotate emanating energy that would run the state.
Somewhere faraway, our lonely aging tribal refugee would watch the sun sink down the horizon. Nostalgia is coming back...
Our Data collection and interpretation is strictly limited to our sense organs and there are as well limits of accuracy to what we can observe through self / instruments....
In this sense, we are equipped with imperfect senses and thus incapable of creating infinite accuracy instruments as well... So, As we observe in dynamical systems are characterised by their sensitivity towards initail conditions. it so often happens when we can't observe to limitless accuracy, we are always short of accurate predictions / determinism even if we know theoritically how a system would behave...
In this way, life (undoubtedly, Dynamic) would continue to offer unsurrealistic surprises... We will always be Future Shockked...
However, we do not need such high accuracy of information always in practical situations... hence determination, a conception founded on human logic and rationality alone would continue to elude us. But, it would always help us to improve the rational understanding about the environments we live in... Chaos theory is just doing that - explaining phenomena that were dismissed as random once...
There are data which are certainly unobservable through our sense organs (Such as emotions etc.), but essentially important. Thats where intuition still supercede what we call intelligence...
Conclusively, we can never accurately (Scientifically) predict whats going to happen of us all the time. No Wonder Astrologers and Palmists can be back in business...
"ok...then Lets increase the seats for OBCs... "
"What? so, these medical punks and iitians are creating too much of unwanted turmoil and going hungry... lets tell them that the original no. of seats shall be maintained and shut their traps..."
More restive protests yet again, more violent cries of discontentment...
"Now these institutions are being a pain in the neck, claiming they can't manage with the existing staff. They need more staff, more money. This damn thing keeps bouncing back."
"Wokay... We'll tell them we'll grant some 8000 crores to improve the infrastructure... and recruit some quality staff for those places. That should end the issue? I know some guys who can teach at these places. We can post them there..."
The haunting image of the big brother is looming large again. What we are witnessing here is stark exemplification of pathetic cover-up of a delicate issue that has been let loose out everyone's control. The sentiments are hurt. The hopes are crashed. The country stands more divided than ever. Folly upon folly, commitments without accountability... How many years does the government want to perform this way?
That’s the story. The next part of the story isn't too tough to guess, there shall be a non-uniform and inadequate allocation & distribution of funds, the govt. never planned this stuff. Where from are they going to raise 8000 crores? Where are the teachers? The space? No thought… just a cold reply against the retaliation. May be there could some more taxes levied. They'd say, show them some specious report with spurious statistics & manipulate the average Indian for sheer avariciousness of power.
Failure to admit its incapacity to improve the education system, its resorting to redistribute whatever is available on some demographic basis and call it implementing "Social Justice". Only that the denominators of social justice this time are caste identities. Unfathomable. But if you really want to improve the living conditions of ‘backward classes’, first make them equal to the rest of all, ensure equal opportunities at all levels of life, not just college, because they are readily available. Create facilities right in their childhood days, give them a good compulsory schooling, make them realize their talents, instill self confidence... Let them create a dream called life for themselves... At least give them a chance to do that... Its much more sustaining than all that disguising generosity that we bestow upon them. ... and probably a better way to blow up 8000 crores...Also, a majority of OBCs live below the poverty line, probably fighting it out for basic necessities of life - A seat in IIT / AIIMS is probably the last thing on their minds...
The fundamental reluctance towards action on such measures is that the implementation is time taking and has a high risk quotient, and has the least cosmetic value and probably a worthless measure when a politician is filling out his annual self-appraisal form. Obviously, anybody knows that he isn't going to stay in power for that long, and no one is going to felicitate a move 15 years back. Also, the majority of the educated in India comfortably disassociate themselves with all forms of political participation (How many of us actually vote?) and the politicians would have no reason to cater to their interests as well
But it should happen here. Somehow. There's no other way. Else, we are just always treating the symptoms. We need a revolution. We need an attitude change. The country needs the confidence to believe that they are participating in the success as a nation. The protests have been encouraging enough, exuding a tinge of optimism from the nation's twenty somethings. The youth is coming forward to reject backward ideas like reservation, free seats, and quotas... We all seem to have enough of these unreasonable freebies. May be for once, people want to make India happening. Or its probably the reverse, may be they want to create a destiny which in turn is rewriting India's Future.
I am not arguing that giving OBCs better opportunities would dilute quality of education, May be it won't but they would certainly substitute the drive for excellence. Which could translate to an irrevocable blunder, for excellence is the only survival instinct we can probably hone us with.
The finance Minister is a brilliant harvard graduate and Dr Man Mohan Singh has a degree from London School of Economics. Do they feel they would have got there, if miserable quotas prevailed at these world-class institutions. Why don’t they speak up now? They couldn't. Thats the price you pay for association with caste-based parties and the Left, and for staying in power. Then what’s social justice, if all it does is trample down any recognition of ability. Social justice that way happens to be a ridiculous conception of whose scope, effects and limitations are something politicians have never been sure of. It’s just a sheer impossibility.
C'mon give human ability and spirit some chance...
They know people can take it... its just a matter of time... everything is always a matter of time. Time has the best cures, but a step like this and the society is wounded for eternity...
